A professor in the French department just emailed me and offered me a job--making some Word documents html compatible.

Wow, that must be some serious html. Most of the time when I work in html it'll naturally put in parantheses. and by that I mean apostrophes.
Also, I hope you're copying this out of Word (which has a bunch of junk html) and into something like Notepad to make it html-ready.
